The Internet comprises networks that are connected to each other. Just as two people can talk on the phone, two computers can communicate via the Internet.

As computers are connected to the Internet, it is possible to connect with others around the world. This is the power of the Internet. A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) begins with “www” which stands for World Wide Web. This term is used to represent the fact that computers worldwide are connected like a web.

Have you ever heard the term “Internet of Things (IoT)”? It refers to a technology that connects things to the Internet. Here, “things” are devices such as computers, refrigerators, and TV. In the past, only computers could communicate with each other, but now other things can also communicate using Internet of Things technology.

Wouldn’t it be great if the computer could understand what I’m saying? In that case, it would be easy to learn how to use a computer! Wouldn’t it also be nice to have a refrigerator and a washing machine that understand what I’m saying? Internet of Things technology makes these kinds of ideas possible.

For example, LG Electronics provides a “Home Chat” service for its home appliances. When you send a message such as “Overall Status” to “Home Chat” using your smartphone, the oven, refrigerator, and air conditioner all report their status, such as “I’m cooking bread now.”

Not all home appliances can understand messages sent by smartphone, only “smart” home appliances such as smart refrigerators and smart washing machines. Of course, smart appliances aren’t as smart as humans, although they’re smart enough to send and receive data and report their status.
