We live in a world full of data. When you take the subway, post on Facebook, or buy something from an online retailer, all kinds of data are collected. As the amount of data has grown, the word “big” has been added to the data as a modifier.

Big data can be used to analyze customer purchasing trends, improve public services, and so on. For example, in 2014, data experts analyzed night calls made in Seoul to help redesign a late-night bus route.

Have you watched Squid Game on Netflix? Netflix, a subscription-based streaming service, leverages big data extremely well in an effort to better understand its customers. It has sought to accurately understand customer preferences by analyzing which movies they watched and which movies they stopped playing.

Before a new movie is released, Netflix assigns it as many tags as possible. For example, the company picked keywords such as action, suspense, drama, touching, and game to describe Squid Game. Using machine learning for big data makes it possible to recommend the most appropriate movies to suit individual preferences, which is one of the drivers of success for Netflix.
